THE FATE OF THE ECTODERM AND ENDODERM OF HYDRA WHEN CULTURED INDEPENDENTLY

Abstract
The ectodermal and endodermal layers of Hydra (sp. undetd.) were cultured independently in an attempt to obtain regeneration of a new Hydra. The results were entirely negative and are interpreted as indicating that the differentiated cells of one tissue layer are unable to transform into the cell types characteristic of the lacking tissue layer, and the undifferentiated cells (the embryonic interstitial cells) do not become activated to regenerate this tissue.
