Abstract
A new concept of the function of the stratum corneum in percutaneous transfer is presented. Topically applied steroids forced into this layer by occlusion for a few hours with Saran Wrap remain for up to two weeks. Their presence can be demonstrated by the development of a physiological marker— vasoconstriction—after repeated occlusion with Saran. The reservoir is in the stratum corneum, as material injected intradermally does not produce a reservoir, no reservoir is demonstrable on skin stripped of the stratum corneum, and a reservoir established on unstripped skin can be destroyed by stripping the area. Keywords
