Abstract
Patterson and Flory have recently analyzed the depolarized Rayleigh scattering of carbon tetrachloride and some n-alkanes with narrow bandpass filters. On the basis of these studies they have proposed a new equation to calculate the molecular optical anisotropy γ2 of low anisotropic compounds, such as n-alkanes and polyoxyethylene oligomers in carbon tetrachloride solutions. We have used this equations with our own experimental values but the results obtained are not satisfactory. However, this equation leads to the same results as given by the classical equation used for compounds moderately or strongly anisotropic, even in very dilute solution.
