Prevalence of Rheumatoid Arthritis in Rural Germany

Abstract
Behrend, T. (Abteiluhg fur Balneologie and Rheumatologie der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover in Bad Nenndorf, Germany), Lawrence, J. S., Behrend, H., and Fischer, K. Prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis in rural Germany. Int. J. Epid. 1972,1 : 153–156. A population sample in Oberhörlen, West Germany, surveyed in 1963 was reassessed in 1968 using the N.Y. criteria for rheumatoid arthritis. The greater prevalence of clinical polyarthritis in males was confirmed and was found to be associated with a history of dysentery during war service. Though the disease in males was seronegative there was no association with sacro-iliitis. Comparison was made with other European population samples and revealed no overall difference in prevalence between Oberhörlen and the other populations.
