Abstract
This paper is a report from the National Salmonella Centre for Nigeria. Five hundred and twenty-five strains of salmonellae distributed among 131 serotypes were isolated during 1956-1958. Of these, 410 strains were from human and 115 strains from various nonhuman sources. The incidence of each serotype and the sources of its isolation are reported. A list of the 44 new serotypes obtained in Nigeria with the sources of their first isolation is given. The importance of animal reservoirs in the epidemiology of salmonella infection in Nigeria is discussed. The studies show that the problem of salmonellosis in Ibadan is one of diversity of the types of Salmonellae to be found in man and animals.
