DEMONSTRATION OF THE GRANULOSIS VIRUS OF THE VARIEGATED CUTWORM

Abstract
The virus responsible for granulosis disease in the variegated cutworm, Peridroma margaritosa, was demonstrated with the electron microscope. The intracellular granular inclusions that characterize the disease were treated with 0.05 M Na2CO3 for 3 hrs., which caused them to dissolve, thereby releasing the single virus particle enclosed within the inclusion. The virus is a rod-shaped structure having an approx. size of about 40 x 240 mu.
