Abstract
A comparison between the reactions of 5-methoxyindol (A) and 5-methylindol (B) showed the following results: While 500 mg. of B did not harm small rabbits (1500 g.), the adm. of 500 mg. of A caused a narcotic state with even larger rabbits (3000 g.). After 500 mg. of A, a dark olivegreen urine was given off which showed a bright green-yellow fluorescence after filtration. The adm. of 500 mg. of B yielded a grey-yellow urine which fluoresced much less after filtration. The fluorescent matter could not be extracted from the urine with any of the common solvents. Tollen''s reaction was negative in both cases; Thormaelen''s and the indican-reaction after Rose-Exton and after Obermeyer were strongly positive in both. The strength of the Thormaelen reaction and the amt. of the eliminated indican (after Rose-Exton) were reciprocal: After adm. of A, a strong Thormaelen reaction and less indican were shown, after B, this was reversed.
