Abstract
We report experiments in which small helical magnetic fields are added to the basic confinement field of a 3-m-long θ pinch. A combination of these fields having and symmetries produces a transverse body force on the plasma column. The strength of the body force has been measured by studying the plasma dynamics and is found to be in agreement with the theoretical value.
