Abstract
A theory of the Rayleigh diffuse line in plastic crystals is proposed. It is shown that the intensity of the diffuse line changes with crystal orientation and that these changes are directly related to the orientational order parameters characteristic of the plastic phase. These results are in agreement with the Kerr effect [T. Bischofberger and E. Courtens, Phys. Rev. Lett. 32, 163 (1974)] and Rayleigh scattering {L. Boyer, R. Vacher, and L. Cecchi [J. Phys. (Paris) 36, (1975)]} measurements made on succinonitrile (cubic plastic crystal). Keywords
