Dislocation pile-ups in periodic internal stresses

Abstract
The effect of oscillating internal stresses and of Lomer-Cottrell dislocations on the properties of dislocation pile-ups is investigated by numerical computations. For certain combinations of wavelength and amplitude of the internal stresses a separation of the groups into sub-groups is found. The stabilizing efficiency of oscillating internal stresses and of Lomer-Cottrell dislocations is studied in some detail. The internal stresses of the modified pile-ups are determined and compared with those of ideal pile-ups. The consequences for work-hardening theories based on long-range stresses are discussed.
