Abstract
From 103 patients surviving carotid endarterectomy, follow-up information was obtained over 4 yr. This was done to facilitate decision making about recommendations for contralateral carotid surgery. In this follow-up study, 3 patients had had contralateral surgery. Three patients had events in the tissue supplied by the contralateral carotid artery and no patient suffered a contralateral stroke. Four patients suffered a stroke in tissue not supplied by the contralateral carotid artery. Four patients experienced classical transient ischemic episodes referrable to the operated carotid artery and 10 patients experienced nonclassical cerebral ischemia. Of the 103 patients, 7 died at times remote from the carotid surgery of nonstroke cause. This publication has 10 references indexed in Scilit:
