Palm leaves are cut symmetrically on the under-surface so that the distal zone of the leaf droops to form a shelter. This cutting is done by the teeth of bats (Uroderma). Several spp. of introduced palms in the Panama Canal Zone have been affected. No similar habit has been reported previously for bats, and no bat has been known hitherto to make a shelter for itself.
