Abstract
Answers to questionnaires showed population trends compared with the preceding year in lemmings (Lemmus and Dicrostonyx), arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus), and snowy owls (Nyctea nyctea). These species and "mice" were generally on an increase on the Labrador coast, south side of Hudson Strait, and a portion of the east side of Hudson Bay. Increase in foxes occurred from Baffin Island to the west coast of Victoria Island and to the south shore of Hudson Bay and was correlated with an increase in lemmings in parts of Baffin and Victoria Islands but less generally elsewhere. Snowy owls appeared to be decreasing on Baffin Island. West and south from Bathurst Inlet there was little change in numbers of Arctic foxes, lemmings, and snowy owls, but between Coppermine River and Mackenzie delta there were some reports of increase in all three species. Sledge dogs were mostly free from epidemics except for a severe outbreak of "distemper" in the lower Mackenzie River delta.
