Far infra-red absorptions of non-dipolar liquids. Part 2.—Temperature and dilution studies

Abstract
Dilution studies on the submillimetre-wavelength absorptions arising in non-dipolar liquids have been carried out on trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, p-difluorobenzene and benzene in solution with cyclohexane, carbon tetrachloride and carbon disulphide. The resulting absorptions have been analysed in terms of a collisional process and a comparison has been made of the absorption observed in a mixture (A + B) with that anticipated from a synthesis based on the absorptions of the components. On this basis, a number of mixtures showed distinct evidence of a new “complex” or “sticky” collision interaction. The submillimetre-wavelength absorption of liquid carbon disulphide has been examined over the temperature range 178–315 K at atmospheric pressure. The temperature dependence of the submillimetre-wavelength absorption has been evaluated in terms of a collisional process.
