I. THE SEPARATION OF SODIUM FROM POTASSIUM IN HUMAN BLOOD SERUM BY ION EXCHANGE CHROMATOGRAPHY

Abstract
A relatively rapid and efficient method for separation of sodium and potassium in serum by ion-exchange chromatography is described. A sulfonic acid cation exchange resin, Dowex 50, is utilized for this purpose. The effect of various factors such as column dimensions, mesh size, flow-rate and concentration of the eluting acid (HCl) on separation of sodium and potassium by this technique is presented. The resin separation of these alkali metals is to be used in the simultaneous measurement of exchangeable body sodium and potassium in man.
