Abstract
Cyathea cunninghamii is a tree fern which has frequently been confused with C. medullaris in the past, but its presence in the New Zealand flora is now reaffirmed. Field and microscopic characters are presented which reliably distinguish C. cunninghamii from both C. medullaris and C. smithii, and its distribution and ecological preferences in New Zealand are briefly discussed. Its closest natural affinity appears to be with C. smithii rather than, as has previously been assumed, with C. medullaris.
