Measuring sexual attitudes

Abstract

The theoretical and practical aspects of measuring sexual attitudes were investigated. Using the replies to a sexual attitude questionnaire developed by Eysenck given to 135 males (50 alcoholics, 50 matched normals and 35 sex offenders), item and factor analysis led to the composition of 9 short scales measuring sexual satisfaction, heterosexual nervousness, sexual curiosity, tension and hostility, pruriency, sexual repression, heterosexual distaste and sexual promiscuity. The reliability and validity of the scales were demonstrated and their relationships to each other and to other aspects of sexuality were described. The relevance of the scales in assessing and monitoring treatment of sexual deviants and other with sex problems was discussed. Tentative norms are provided.
