Abstract
Results of computer simulated experiments on mutual neutralisation in an ambient gas, at atmospheric pressure and at temperatures from 1000 to 3000K are reported. The investigation covers a wide range of values of d, the distance apart of the ions at a pseudo-crossing, and of P, the probability that mutual neutralisation ensues from a double traversal of the pseudo-crossing. The ambient gas may greatly increase the rate coefficient for mutual neutralisation. The effect is especially marked if d and P are low.
