FERROBACILLUS FERROOXIDANS: A CHEMOSYNTHETIC AUTOTROPHIC BACTERIUM

Abstract
The chemosynthetic auto-troph Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans was further characterized. This bacterium is indigenous in bituminous coal regions and oxidizes ferrous to ferric iron. Neither sulfur nor thiosulfate was oxidized under favorable environmental conditions. The preparation of a medium similar in composition to acid mine water was described. This medium was solidified by silicic acid, which was prepared by an ion exchange procedure. The role of this microorganism in stream recovery processes and in the increase in stream acidity was discussed.
