THE NON-ESSENTIALITY OF THE POSTERIOR HYPOPHYSIS IN PARTURITION

Abstract
The posterior hypophysis was completely removed (verified by microscopic examination of tissue) in 12 adult [female] rats; anterior lobe tissue was partially removed, enough remaining in all to maintain body growth and in 9 to preserve sex cycles. Of these latter 6 were mated and bore litters at the usual time, showing that in rats a secretion of posterior hypophysis is unnecessary for parturition.
