CHLORPROMAZINE AS A THERAPEUTIC AGENT IN CLINICAL MEDICINE

Abstract

CHLORPROMAZINE ( 10-[γ-dimethylaminoprophyl] - 2 - chlorophenothiazine hydrochloride) is a phenothiazine derivative which has been reported to be effective in the treatment of a wide variety of clinical conditions.* Preliminary observations have indicated that it is useful in neuroses and psychoses,† nausea and vomiting,‡ shock,¹¹and as an agent to augment the effect of anesthetics and opiates.¹²The purpose of the present report is to present a summary of results obtained when chlorpromazine was used for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, for nausea and vomiting of diverse causation, and for intractable hiccoughs. In these studies each patient served as his own control. The results reported for the neuropsychiatric patients should be considered qualitative rather than quantitative observations. The primary purpose of this aspect of the study was an attempt to estimate therapeutic applicability in varied neuropsychiatric disorders.
