Abstract
Various sp. of small holotrichous ciliates have been used for biol. research, employing axenic culture (i.e., free from other microorganisms). The taxonomy of these ciliates has been confused. Investigation of 26 presently-used pure culture strains indicated that 21 of them belonged to the same sp.. T. pyriformis (Ehrenberg, 1830) Lwoff, 1947. The taxonomic history of the genus and sp. is summarized, and the sp. described in detail. The individuals of most strains have no micro-nuclei.Keywords
