Most experimenters have overlooked the possible effects of early (pre-experimental) experience upon the behavior of animals in experimental situations. Such matters as source of the animals, maintenance schedules, caging, handling, accidental deprivation or possible traumatic experiences are all relevant pre-experimental variables.
