THE PROGNOSIS OF THREATENED ABORTION

Abstract
In a series of 3,082 patients studied from the first trimester of pregnancy, the incidence of threatened abortion was 11.8%. The incidence of abortion was 5.6%, and in two‐thirds of cases there was no preceding episode of hæmorrhage. The risk of abortion was directly proportional to the amount of bleeding and was 81% when admission to hospital was required. The perinatal mortality rate was 3.2% in 307 pregnancies complicated by threatened abortion which proceeded to viability, and there was no significant increase in the incidence of prematurity or Intrauterine growth retardation. In this group, the incidence of major fœtal malformation (0.6%) was less than in the community as a whole.
