Abstract
The excitation of a number of helium states has been studied for incident electron energies near the single-ionization threshold. In the excitation of the 31D state a broad oscillatory structure is observed, which extends beyond the ionization threshold. This structure is interpreted in terms of an indirect excitation mechanism for states with high orbital angular momentum, as predicted by Fano (1974).Keywords
