Abstract
The paper presents the role of monitoring and evaluation in the implementation of a programme for child mental health and development in Sri Lanka. Issues highlighted in the paper include the selection of process and impact indicators, methodologies used to determine reliable, valid and appropriate criteria for rating indicators, particularly those relating to the home environment and development of the child. Results of the use of these indicators on the programme, their value in identifying risk groups, and their relevance for future service developments are discussed.
