EFFECTS OF CALCIUM ON PROLIFERATION OF LACTIC STREPTOCOCCUS BACTERIOPHAGE I. ,

Abstract
Plaque formation by 11 strains of lactic streptococcus bacteriophage was stimulated by addition of CaCl2 to the plating medium. Different bacteriophage strains were not stimulated to the same extent by the added Ca. Older suspensions responded to a greater degree than did fresh preparations of the same strain. A 2-layer procedure for preparing plaque plates that utilizes the stimulatory effect of Ca is described. The method has given countable plaques with a large number of strains that produce plaques poorly by other procedures, and permits estimation of the numbers of bacteriophage particles with a high degree of reproducibility.
