Abstract
These cases fall into 4 anatomic groups (1) portal vein thrombosis in portal hypertension due to portal cirrhosis[long dash]3 cases; (2) superior mesenteric vein thrombosis, with intestinal symptoms predominating[long dash]3 cases; (3) involvement of the smaller radicles of the portal system[long dash]1 case; and (4) portal system thrombosis associated with carcinoma[long dash]3 cases. The factors involved in the production of this condition are blood flow changes, changes in the veins, gastrointestinal changes, syphilis and tuberculosis, post-operative thrombocythemia, pressure of ascitic fluid, adhesions, increased viscosity of the blood, intravenous tissue extracts, various chemical and toxic factors and many other diseases producing portal hypertension (e.g., primary portal phlebosclerosis).
