Abstract
HEROIN addiction and now also methadone addiction among pregnant women have been increasing steadily over the years. The full scope of the problem is unknown because of the illicit nature of the drug traffic. However, with the increasing incidence of drug addiction in general, and since 85 per cent of the women involved are in the childbearing age (15 to 40 years), one would thus also expect an increase in the number of births of infants of drug-addicted mothers.It has been estimated that there are between 400,000 and 600,000 heroin addicts in the United States.
