At present, the second-look laparotomy is the most reliable method of evaluating the disease status of a patient treated with chemotherapy for ovarian carcinoma. The morbidity of the procedure is minimal, and the findings are of prognostic value and may provide information necessary to redirect optimal therapy. Since randomized trials with or without second-look surgery have not been conducted, an absolute statement regarding its influence on survival is not possible.
