The Snails, Pseudosuccinea columella (Say), New Intermediate Hosts for the Liver Fluke Fasciola gigantica Cobbold

Abstract

Pseudosuccinea columella experimentally exposed to miracidia of Fasciola gigantica, and dissected 15 days later, showed rediae and daughter rediae. Forty-two days after infection, cercariae were noted emerging from the snails and encysting on vegetation. Small fasciolid flukes, 1.5-2 mm. long were found in the liver of guinea pigs 15 days after the animals were fed the encysted metacercariae.
