Abstract
De-scription of an apparatus for isolating the blood-sucking mite (Liponyssus bacoti) from sawdust or mixed sand and earth. The equipment was necessary in conjunction with a study of the life cycle of L. bacoti and its role in the transmission of the filaria worm Litomosoides carinii to the cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidis). The principle of the apparatus is that of a heated cylinder embracing and moving slowly along a long glass tube containing the mite infested material. The cylinder in its progress drives the mites into a terminal chamber. The apparatus has been extremely useful in saving time and labor of isolating mites. Complete drawings and directions are given for assembling the apparatus.
