Periodontal Disease in the 18-Month-Old Germfree Rat

Abstract
Periodontal disease, characterized by loss of alveolar bone and downgrowth of the epithelial attachment with the formation of true periodontal pockets, was found in all 8 (18-mon. old Sprague-Dawley rats) studied. In some of the lesions, the impaction of hair and/or food was an important etiologic factor.
