IS CLASSICAL PSYCHOANALYSIS A DANGEROUS PROCEDURE?

Abstract
Data derived from a survey of 126 patients in classical psychoanalysis show that psychotic regression and dangerous self-destructive behavior during treatment were extremely uncommon. Borderline patients manifested no greater tendency toward serious decompensation than did neurotics and patients with character disorders. It is likely that careful screening and conservative treatment by well trained analysts rendered classical psychoanalysis virtually innocuous for this patient group.
