House Fly Breeding in Oak Sawdust and Peanut Hulls Used as Bedding in Calf Pens1

Abstract
Three tests were made using sawdust and peanut hull bedding (of 24,24 and 21 days duration). Four calves were placed in each pen. To reduce location bias, the same type of litter was not used in either pen in successive tests. Bedding samples of approximately 1000 cu. in. were taken from each pen at the time the tests were completed. The 1st test showed 26 times as many flies in the peanut hull bedding as in the sawdust, the 2n, 8 times as many, and the 3rd, 49 times as many.
