ON THE EXCRETION OF IODINE IN THE SALIVA

Abstract

Salivary I detns. were carried out on 16 normal subjects and on one patient with essential hypertension. The following observations were made. Marked increases in the conc. of I in the saliva were noted after the oral adm. of KI, I dissolved in poppy seed oil and ethyl diiodobrassidate. The maximal conc. of salivary I occurs in approx. 1-2 1/2 hrs. after the ingestion of KI or I dissolved in poppy seed oil but may be delayed for 5 or 6 hrs. after the oral adm. of ethyl diiodobrassidate. More than normal amts. of I in the saliva may still be detected as long as 72 hrs. after the ingestion of these substances. After the intraven. adm. of NaI, the maximal conc. of iodine in the saliva occurs within 5 mins. The I content of the saliva fails to increase after the oral adm. of Na tetraiodophenolphthalein.
