Optical-Model Potential for Nucleons Scattered by Nuclei

Abstract
The Serber model of high-energy nuclear interactions permits one to express the "optical-model" potential for nucleons in terms of nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. The potential is written in terms of four well-depth parameters in the form UC=[VCR+iVCI]ρ(r)+[VSR+iVSI]μc21rdρdrσ·1, and experiments necessary to determine the four parameters VCR, VCI, VSR, and VSI are discussed. The explicit relations between the parameters and nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes are given and existing experimental data are reviewed.
