Abstract
Rats on a low-I diet showed thyroid hyperplasia and increased radio-I uptake. Addition of 2% CaCo3 to diet increased these changes. Absorption of iodide from the gut was not inhibited by CaCo3. Iodide trapping mechanism of thyroid was not diminished. The mechanism of action of CaCo3 appeared to be either inhibition of thyroxine synthesis or increased iodide clearance by kidney.
