Some Factors Affecting Feed Utilization in Growing Beef Cattle

Abstract
The effect of birth weight, age on test, and rate of gain on feed efficiency uncorrected and corrected for maintenance was studied using 43 calves. Bull calves gain moTe rapidly and are more efficient than heifers even though they decrease more in efficiency with increases in body weight. Heavier calves at birth are more efficient on test. Faster gaining calves utilize feed more efficiently than slower gainers. Lines vary in rate and efficiency. One line is most efficient even though gains are not the greatest.
