Abstract
The development of a new type of multiplier phototube, originally designed for television purposes, is described. The tube combines high cathode-sensitivity and high multiplication factor with low noise/signal ratio. A special feature is the large area of the photocathode which is advantageous when a light-beam of large cross-section has to be intercepted. Modified versions of the tube (types 5060 and 5311) have a photocathode consisting of a semi-transparent layer deposited on a flat window. In this form the tube has proved particularly suitable for scintillation detection in nuclear research.
