Metal Impurity Reduction by Working Gas Injection in a Tokamak

Abstract
Reduction of metal impurities in the JFT-2 tokamak is studied. The possibility of cooling the scrape-off plasma by injection of a working gas has been studied as a method of reducing the metal impurities introduced by sputtering. The relations among the electron temperature of the scrape-off plasma, the line intensity of Mo and the radiation power loss are examined in both injection and interruption of the working gas, and the effects of gas injection on fluctuations are also examined. Injection of a working gas decreases the electron temperature of the scrape-off plasma, which in turn decreases both the production of metal impurities due to sputtering and the radiation loss power. Gas injection also has a good effect on fluctuations.
