Skin Effect in Viscose Rayon

Abstract
The differential staining of the "skin" and "core" of viscose rayon by certain dyes has been previously explained on the basis of a more highly oriented skin. Improved meth ods of staining, developed in the present investigation, show that the formation of a skin is more closely related to the crystallization rate of the cellulose in the spinning bath than to the orientation resulting from stretching. A possible mechanism for skin formation is suggested and the relationship of fiber structure to fiber properties is discussed briefly.
