Congenital Aneurysm of the Left Aortic Sinus

Abstract

This report concerns the clinical and pathologic findings of a congenital aneurysm in the area of the left aortic sinus of a bicuspid aortic valve. The occurrence of this rare lesion in a 54-year-old woman resulted in compression of the left coronary artery and its primary branches. This was manifested as angina and myocardial infarction. In retrospect the aneurysm could be seen on the standard thoracic roentgenogram as an enlargement along the left cardiac border in the usual position at the left atrial appendage. Four other examples of aneurysm of the left aortic sinus have been reported to date. The differences and similarities between these cases are discussed.
