The Rankine Magnetic Balance and the Magnetic Susceptibility ofH2O, HDO andD2O

Abstract

Details are given of the construction of a Rankine magnetic balance which realizes the full theoretical sensitivity of this type of instrument. The volume magnetic susceptibilities of stated mixtures of light and heavy water relative to that of ordinary water are reported, and from these data the relative mass susceptibilities of HDO and ${\mathrm{D}}_2$O are deduced. The mass susceptibility of ${\mathrm{H}}_2$O is assumed to be -0.7200 × ${10}^{-6\mathrm{}}$, in terms of which that of HDO is -0.6807 × ${10}^{-6\mathrm{}}$ and of ${\mathrm{D}}_2$O is -0.6466 × ${10}^{-6\mathrm{}}$.
