Comments on the Lattice Model of Liquid Crystals

Abstract
It is shown that lattice-model approximations for liquid crystals agree qualitatively with experiment only if rotational invariance is maintained. Results for simple models satisfying this criterion indicate that the isotropic-nematic phase transition is weakly first order.Keywords
