Abstract
The Hartree-Fock problem for even-even nuclei in the shell is solved without requiring the intrinsic state to be axially symmetric. Two regions of axial asymmetry are found—around and around . The existence of an energy gap between occupied and nonoccupied single-particle states is established for all cases. The moment-of-inertia tensor for the axially asymmetric cases is computed and provides an improvement over the axially symmetric results of former calculations.
