Abstract
From the methyl esters of the unsaturated fatty acid fraction of brain cerebrosides n-hexacosenic acid (mp. 45-45.5[degree]C) was isolated by fractional distillation of the methyl esters followed by saponi-fication. This is the first reported isolation of this compound from animal tissues. It makes up 17% of the nervonic acid fraction of brain cerebrosides. The isolation and identification of nervonic acid is confirmed by the extensive new fractionation data reported.
