THE ORDER OF INDUCTION AND DEINDUCTION OF THE ENZYMES OF THE LACTOSE OPERON IN E. COLI

Abstract
Immediately following induction, the order of appearance of two enzymes of the lactose operon of E. coli, [beta]-galactosidase and thiogalactoside transacetylase, has been studied. [beta]-Galactosidase appeared several minutes earlier than the transacetylase at 37[degree]. When the inducer was removed, the synthesis of galactoside stopped before that of the transacetylase. It is tentatively proposed that the messenger RNA corresponding to the lactose operon is both translated and degraded from the operator end.
