Sporotrichosis Treated With Amphotericin B

Abstract

A case of sporotrichosis in a patient with a solitary lesion resistant to conventional potassium iodide therapy is presented. Other treatment regimens that have been reported effective for sporotrichosis (griseofulvin, vaccine therapy, and oral amphotericin B) failed to cure this infection. Intravenous infusions of amphotericin B promptly healed the lesion. Renal biopsies were obtained before and after treatment with intravenous amphotericin B. No pathological changes were present in the first renal biopsy, but nephrocalcinosis was found after completion of this treatment. This is the first case of a localized cutaneous mycosis with normal kidneys in which histological renal changes are reported as a complication of intravenous amphotericin B therapy.
