Abstract
On the basis of semi-empirical INDO calculations of the atomistic and electronic structure of F+ and F centres in corundum crystals, a novel explanation of the old puzzle of F+ to F photostimulated conversion is suggested. Literature data are presented supporting a quite general character of this phenomenon in ionic solids with defects. Keywords
